(Per Press Association). Christchukch, Dec. 17. It is stated that in the event of the Hon. "W. P. Reeves retiring from the Christchurch seat the National Association will bring the Hon. W. Kolleston forward. Auckland, Dec. 17. The Southern Cross mission steamer Bougard, from Melanesia, after four and a half months' cruising, owing to most of the crew becoming incapacitated by fever and ague, bad to pass over the New Hebrides and Banks districts. The schooner will remain in Auckland for some months. Charles White, senr., of Victoria Valley, Mongonui, has been found drowned The steamer Osprey is beached at South Head, Kaipara. She struck a log coming down the river. Napier, Dec. 17. At a hastily summoned but largely attended meeting to-night it was decided to form a branch of the National Association here. Since opening the breakwater wharf steamers calling on Sundays have landed passengers and lusrgage and then discharged cargo into lighters in the Bay. Henceforth the Customs will not premit this and steamers arriving on Sunday will have to be at the wharf until Monday before discharging as at other ports. Mr H. Hill, Inspector of Schools, was to-day granted two months' leave of absence and LSO in order that he might visit the Australian colonies and report on the systems of education there. Hokitika, Dec. 17. The Harbour Board to-night resolved not to again insure their properties, as a protest against the action of the insurance companies in increasing the rates more than 50 per cent. Dunedin. Dec. 17. A Chinamau named Ah Tak, known as " Poyerty," was killed at Nevis on Saturday by a fall of earth. Wellington, Tins Day. Mr G. Fisher was installed as Mayor to-day, but beyond stating he hoped during his term of office to be able to reduce the rates, he gave no indication of his policy.
