The New South Wales cricket team are among the passengers. To the end of November of this year the imports of this colony show an increase of i' 847,000 and exports £760,000. Compared with the preceding three years the exports are much larger and the returns all round show a decided expansion in trade. The fatal fourth passed off well and Mils were all met. As an evidence that there is bo lack of tonnage there were no less than 65 foreign going steamers and sailing vessels in Sydney one day this week. The aggregate deep sea tonnage of Newcastle and Sydney exceeded the whole of the other Australian ports. In breadstuffs the market closed steady and firm. Millers filled their requirements in new wheat at 4s 6d and it is now offering at 4s, which means level of values. To mark thejreturn of freetrade further business is reported pending in Calif or man wheat. In produce for the wheat there are evident heavier stocks in leading lines than has been the case for some time. Onions were slightly easier ; other values were well maintained. The market all the week has been firm. Newcastle, Dec 8. The Mayor presided at a conference of colliery owners to discuss means to improve the coal trade. Four of the largest owners were not represented, which is taken as an indication that they are not in sympathy with the movement. The Conference appointed a committee to inquire into the methods of improving trade by the vend and pooling systems ; also to try and induce owners at present standing alool' to join the movement and report at a future meeting.
