A Land Tax Fraud.
(Per s.s. Tekapo at the Bluff.) Sydney, Noyr. 12. A man arrested near Pyrmont last week on a charge of false pretences, is alleged to have carried on a most ex. traordinary series of frauds on the farmers of the district. He travelled round representing himself as an appraiser under the Land Tax, and in that capacity he would "exempt" land from taxation by driving a white peg in to show that it had received this favor from him. It is further stated that he would offer to resume on behalf of the Government, giving a cheque an an instalment signed only with the initials "J.M.," and " M.D." to represent the Mines Department. These cheques were to be held until the Superintendent came along in a few days, and he would countersign them, when they could be at once cashed. The cheques were always drawn for small amounts over and obove the sum to be paid, thns leaving the purchasing agent something to receive as change. The cheques were drawn on obsolete forms. When arrested, the man stated he bad been employed by a person who represented himself as " Chief Appraiser " under the Land Tax Act, to act as he had done. — Post.
