(Per Press Association). CHRISTCHtJRCH, Nov. 18. A cottage at Rangiora, owned by W. McManataara, was destroyed by firo last night. It was insured in the Liverpool, London and Globe office for .£IOO. A seven-roomed house at Springfield, owned by W. Dorman, was burned down yesterday afternoon. It was insured for £100 in the National office, and the furniture in the same office. At the Supremo Court to-day Thos. White pleaded guilty to breaking and entering, and was sentenced to twelve months. Geo. Stanton and William Aldridge for stealing tobacco from a warehouse of F. Trent each received two years ; William Kennedy and Geo. Humphries breaking and entering 18 months' imprisonment ; John Walsh and Thos. Smith stealing liquors from a refreshment room at Addington sale yards, six months each. Mr F. W. Waymouth has been re- [ elected unopposed as Mayor of St. Albans. I, Messrs W. Cook, W. Redclifife, N. 0. : Schumacher and J. Stinson have bees { nominated for Lyttelton. ' Auckland, Nov. 20. Frank Bennett aged 15 was accidentally jammed against a post while riding. He died of lock-jaw. A child, four years old, daughter of Edward Fitzpatrick, died of injuries received through its clothes catching fire. I Wellington, Nov. 20. Government has informed the Council 1 of the University College that none of 1 the reserves mentioned as available for it can be appropriated with special legislation. The Chairman said in yiew of ' this it was useless to hold any more meetings for the present and the Council adjourned till Parliament meets. " Sir Charles Lilley and Sir Bruce 1 Burnside, arbitrators in connection with the dispute between the Midland Railway and Government arrived by the Mararoa.
