The Sydney Cycling Carnival.
A BRILLIANT WIN FOR ZIMMERMAN. (Per Press Association.) Sydney, Nov. 16. At the Cycling Carnival there was the largest attendance ever seen on the cricket ground. It was estimated that there were over 30,000 present. The crush was so great that it levelled the railings in front of the grandstand, and overflowed the ground. The following are the results : — Half-mile Championship of Australasia. Zimmerman (America), 1 ; Parsons (Victoria), 2; Iredale (Victoria), 3; Lewis (Victoria), 4. The other competitors included Megson, and the Italian rider Porta, who tailed to win their heats. Parsons made the running until entering on the last lap, with Zimmerman last, but the latter came on the outside with a phenomenal spurt, and leaving the others as if moored, won as he liked by thirty yards. The winner received a great ovation, and it is generally admitted that such riding as his has never before been witnessed in Australia. Wheel Race. — Harkins (Sydney), 1 ; Hawiey (Sydney), 2 ; Lynch (Newcastle), 2. Won easily by 25 yards. Time, smin 5 4-sth sees. First-class Handicap, 1£ miles. — Megson (Sydney), 1; Parsons, 2; Payne, 3. Martin (America) did not start. There was a magnificent finish. Megson, who won by a few inches, is not in the best of health, and completely collapsed after crossing the line, and had to be carried to the pavilion, where he was attended by a doctor. He soon recovered. Time, 3min 54 2-sth seconds.
