The Napier Artillery Volunteers are to have a Nordenfeldt gun. Mr J. M. Richardson has retired from the contest for the Wellington Mayoralty. Mr Carthew received his usual EDglish case of hooks and periodicals yesterday afternoon. Entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams sale at Palmerston on the 14th inst are now advertised. A splendid line of woolly hoggets is advertised for sale to-day by Mr H. W. Kuowles, of Taonui. An earthquake of some severity was felt here this morning about seven minutes past three o'clock. The Salvation Army will hold a monster picnic in the Oval on Monday next to which admission will be free. Monday next being the Prince of Wales' Birthday, the Feilding Star will not be published. To-morrow's services in connection with the Wesleyan Church are announced. The Prince of Wales is 54 years of age to-day. We wish him " Many happy returns of the day." Monday next, the 11th instant, will be observed as a holiday by the children attending the Feilding State school. The Manawatu Herald reports that one or two residents in the Borough of Foxton will shortly blossom forth as duly gazetted J.P.'s. To-morrow morning Mr G. Grant will preach in the Primitive Methodist Church and Mrs Kichardson will preach in the evening. A variety entertainment to be followed by a dance will be given in the Cheltenham Public Hall on Monday evening in aid oi the piaoo fund. ] A wool buyer has just completed a transaction in the Hunterville district for a clip of wool at 8d per lb delivered at the railway station. The citizens of Feilding are invited by the Mayor to observe Monday next as a holiday in honor of the birthday of the Prince of Wales. The Town Clerk gives official notice that Mr Clark Lucas has been appointed Inspector of Nuisances for the Borough of Feilding during the absence on leave of Mr Flavall. The wheel-tax in the Taranaki County realised i 750 for the year and cost £30 to collect. It has been decided to suspend its collection after the end of this year. There is an intention to hold an Autumn show at Palmerston North in connection with the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, and a committee has been appointed to suggest a suitable date. Orange pips have caused the death of Mr James Stewart, an old resident of Orange (N.S.W.) He thoughtlessly swallowed a number of them, causing a stoppage of the intestines. An operation revealed the fact. Two English gontlemen succeeded in j crossing the Channel, from Dover to Calais, in a tandem cycle boat, the journey occupying seven hours and a quarter. The boat was 24 feet long, fitted with a paddle cycle. Yesterday Mr W. Heald completed the work of erecting one of the windmills made by Mr Jones, of Feilding, to pump water for the Bowling green. Mr Bray (senr.), architect, who passed the work says it is most completely satisfactory. Candidates intending to enter for the Wanganui Education Board's annual scholarship to be held at Boy's School, Wanganui, on December 17, 18 and 19, are notified that one month's notice of their intention to sit must be given to the secretary of the Board, The Merrivale Estate, Southland, of 10.000 acres in extent, recently acquired by the Government under the Land for Settlements Act, bas been cut up into 53 allotments, the smallest being twenty acres and the largest 450 acres, and is open for selection on lease in perpetuity. Private advice bas been received at Wellington of the death at Buxtou, England, of Mrs Carter, wife of Mr C. R. Carter, an old resident of Wellington, who was M.H.R. for Wairarapa during the sixties. Mr and Mrs Carter have lived in London for the last few years. The ladies who form the Sewing Bee circle in connection with the Wesleyan Church intend holding a sale of work on the first Wednesday in December. If possible the sale will be held in the Drill Hall. Visitors will be entertained by a promenade concert. Great pains are being taken to provide a really first-class entertainment. Further particulars will be duly advertised. Birmingham is the greatest brassmaking town in the world, and it keeps in steady employment an average of 7000 brassworkers. Paris comes in a good second. In the former town the hands work nine hours a day, and earn, when competent, about 80s to 33s a week ; while in the latter city they work 10 hours, and earn 40s a week. A Bill has been introduced into the New South Wales Assembly for the eradication of the codlin moth. It provides that the occupier of any orchard, on discovering the presence of the codlin moth, is to give notice to an inspector, and upon receiving a copy of the regulations he must take action to destroy the pest. Neglect to £w» notice or to eradicate the moth is to be visited by a fme of not more than L 5. A meeting of the Shooting Committee of the Manchester Rifles was held in the orderly room on Thursday night, Lieut. Bray in the chair. A letter was received from the Rangitikei Royal Rifles regretting that they could not at present accept a challenge from the Manchesters to fire a match. It was decided that the next competition be held on Wednesday, November '20th, the ranges to be, snider 300 and 500 yards, martini 300, 500 and 600 yards. Vol T. Evans was appointed marker for the remainder of the season. A sub-committee was appointed to pat the range in good order.
The Hospital Board election will be held on 27th November. If federation ever obtains in the Australasian Colonies it will be brought about on the bowling greens. Mr John Cobbe has just receiyed per s.s. Pakeha a big assortment of ladies' silk blouses. These have been bought " Job " at the end of the London season, and are much under ordinary prices. The father of Meagher, of Dean notority, died in Sydney last week, after the disgrace of his son. The hearing of the charges against his son was postponed a day in consequence. Tableaux vivants, statuary and sing" ing tableaux, under magnesium light' will comprise the exquisitely novel and beautiful entertainment to be given in aid of the Public Library funds on the 22nd instant. A Christchurch correspondent telegraph : — More exhibits are going to Welllington for the show than for many years. Mr G. Scales, secretary of the Wellington Association, who is at present in this city, has received entries from the principal breeders of Shorthorn cattle and Down, Licoln and Leicester sheep ; also numerous entries of hacks and horses for the jumping competition, vehicles, implements etc. Many persons have expressed curiosity as to the origin of the word " Euroclydon," the name of the winner of the New Zealand Cup. " Euroclydon " is an old Greek name for a stormy wind that blew at certain seasons from the westward. It will be found mentioned in the 27th chapter of the Acts, 14th verse, which read : — But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind called Euroclydon." Mr F. Pirani, M.H.R., has received the following letter from J. McKerrow, Chairman of the Land Purchase Board: — •• I am directed by the Hon. Minister of Lands to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of October 14th last on the subject ot acquiring Sir James Penderpast's estate at Fitzherbert under the Land for Settlements \ct 1894 for the purpose of furthering small settlement, and in reply thereto to state that the contents have been noted." Last night when Mr R. F. Haybittle was driving past one of the railway bridges in town, he heard a splash. He pulled np bis horses and found that a man had in attempting to cross the bridge, fallen between the sleepers into tne water. Mr Haybittle enquired where he was going and received the reply "To Davy Jones." However Mr Haybittle got him landed all safe and beyond a ducking the man was none the worse. He blamed the bridge for having holes in it.
