Political Notes.

(H.B. Herald). THE VACANT JUDGESHIP. Lengthy Cabinet meetings are being held at present, and much speculation is indulged in as to the possible changes in the Cabinet, which Sir Patrick Buckley's acceptance of the vacant Judgeship would necessitate. THE UPPER HOUSE. It is stated that the appointment of a j fresh batch of Councillors is engaging j the attention of Ministers, and the two most prominent names for seats in the Upper House are still those of Mr W. C. Smith, of Waipukurau, and Mr Arkwright, of Marton. Mr George Jones, of Oamarn, is also likely to be amongst the new ConnciMors, provided the Governor ; consents to any further appointments. THE OPPOSITION. I hear the Opposition party will be | thoroughly organised for the next election, and as I before stated there is likely to be an abundance of candidates to contest every seat in the comiflg struggle. It is at any rate regarded as a certainty that Mr F. Redwood will contest the Blenheim seat with Mr Buick. Mr Hursthouse is to oppose Mr Graham for Nelson. Mr Bruce, the former member, is to contest Bangitikei against Mr John Stevens, and Mr Bruce's return is said to be almost assured. I hear, also, that Judge Kettle intends coming forward in the Opposition interest for either New Plymouth or Wanganui. Mr Samuels, a former member of the House, contemplates standing for one of the West Coast seats, probably against Mr E. M. Smith. I hear further that Mr Scobie M'Kenzie is being pressed to contest the Awarua seat with the Colonial Treasurer, and that he is promised a large measure of support.
