THE SHOP HOURS BILL.
The amended Shop and Shop-assistants Bill has now become law. Its most important feature is the abolition of all exemptions as regards closing, and it is hoped tbe Bill will work better in the future than it has in the past. The small shopkeepers will be allowed to fix their day of closing in January in each succeeding year. Such being the case, it may be accepted that the Saturday half -holiday which obtains in some parts of the colony at present is doomed, 'and Wednesday will be universally chosen as the most convenient for all parties, and inflicting least injury on traders — whether great or small. A strong effort was made by Sir Robert Stout to have hotel bars included in the operations of the Bill, but the Legislative Council would not agree to this, therefore the proposal had to be dropped. We cannot say that we entirely approve of the Bill, even in its amended form, because we think that even " compulsory joy " is unpalatable to a free people wbo like to exercise a little real independence in the management and control of their own affairs.
