The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 1895. SHEEP RETURNS.
In our last issue we published an extract from the Sheep Returns of the Colony to April 30th, 1895, wbich showed that an alleged " falling off " had taken place since the preceding year in the southern portion of the North Island, except in the Hutt County, where there was a slight increase. So far as the Oroua and Manawatu Counties are concerned, at least, the reason for this is that having in view the necessity of keeping only such numbers of sheep as their farms could carry with the certainty of having ample food supplies during the winter the flocks were judiciously culled in a majority of instances, so that in the end it is not likely there will be any decrease in either the quantity or the quality oi tb© wool. The greatest mistake sheep or cattle farmers can make is overstocking, as they have learned by bitter experience. The next piece of knowledge they have to acquire is the desirableness of laying in a supply of winter food, and the practical utilisation of that valuable information. It may mean hard work, but it also means assured profits. _________^___
