At Oamaru Phillip H. Blakesley was sentenced to three days' imprisonment for gaining admission to Bland Holt's performance in that town by means of a forged ticket. The return was recently laid upon the table of the House, and shows the work for 1893 94 and nine months of 1895. In 1893 the Chief Justice held 296 sittings ; in 1894, 264; in 1895, 245. Judge Richmond's figures were 204, 192 and 139 ; Judge Conollv's, 263, 317 and 195 ; Judge Denniston's, 209, 210 and 160 ; and Judge Williams' 216, 201 and 162. In a case at Dunedin last week, where a young man was charged with stealing money from a hotel, Mr Hanlon, counsel for the defence, referred, says the Star, to the absurdity of the Act in compelling the Justices to send a prisoner for trial simply because he committed a theft in a dwelling. It did not matter how much an article was valued at, the I Bench could not deal with the case. If a person stole a button from a dwelling the Magistrate was bound to commit the prisoner for trial. In our report of the meeting held to consider the proposal for lighting the borough with electric light, several words were omitted in the resolution moved by Mr Carthew, which put a different construction on the motion. It should have read : — *• That in the event of the Council not being prepared to entertain the lighting of the town but prepared to give reasonable concessions it is advisable a limited liability company be formed with a capital of £3000 in 600 shares of £5 each to undertake and carry out the matter." Referring to the New Zealand decision thatwomen should not be allowed to sit in the House of Representatives, the Westminster Gazette states that women have the right to sit in the Parliament of one of the American States — that of Colorado. At first special note was taken of them in the House. They were singled out and made to feel like intruders. Some of the male M.P.
