Hawke's Bay A. and P. Show.
. o {Per Press Association < Napier, October 11. At the A. and P. Show to-day excep tional interest was centred in the contest, pens of twenty sheep, any breed, to compete for Society's special prizes for most profitable sheep. The judging was by points, the maximum being 25 for weight, wool 25, value of fleece 15, quality of mutton 15, early maturity 10, symmetry and weight ten. Generally speaking Lincolns and crosses did best in the wool but poorly in points for mutton. Leicester and Romney crosses with Lincolns lost yery little in wool, and gained much in carcase. Tbe prize pen was crossbred Shropshire-Lincoln two-tooths, shown by Captain Russell, wbo made 90f points, scoring the maximum for quality, early maturity, symmetry and 21^ for value of fleece. Another pen of four-tooths, exactly the same breed, however took a lower position, indicating that though the cross is valuable for lambs for freezing, it is not adapted for flock purposes. Tbe second prize went to a pen of Mr Douglas McLean's four tootbs first Lincoln — Merino cross, making 83 points, but twotooths of this cross were low on the list. The third prize was secured by Mr J. N. Williams for Border Leicester — Lincoln cross two-tooths, making 82£ points. The champion prize for thoroughbreds went to Mr Orinond's Dreadnought ; draughts, to Mr J. N. William's Topaz, bntin tbese classes the show was small. Shorthorns were strong, and a very fine champion bull was Belinda Duke of Derrimul 40th, imported by Mr A. McHardy. A young bull by the chamoion also showed magnificient quality, The champion cow was Reality 111, bred by Mr McHardy. Other breeds were almost unrepresented.
