The DebatiDg Society will meet at 7*30 this evening. There will be Mass on Sunday next at 8 a.m. at St. Bridget's, Feilding. Additions are made to-day to the list of entries for Messrs Abraham and Williams Palmerston sale. On Sunday afternoon the Primitive Methodist Choir will give a song service in the Cheltenham Hall. The committee of the Feilding Athletic Club will meet in Mr Sherwill's office on Friday next at 8 p.m. Mr Geo. Fisher has announced himself as a candidate for the Wellington Mayoralty. The Gazette notifies that section 12, block IV, Pohangina, containing 194 acres has been reserved as an educational endowment. The Wellington correspondent of the Oainaru Mail learns that the statement made in the Christchurch Press that the Agent-General had obtained counsel's opinion that the seizure of the Midland railway by the Government was illegal, is unfounded. The Agent-General was never authorised to obtain such an opinion, and has never communicated it to the Government. The silver cradle latety manufactured by Mr. Frank Grady, of Wellington to commemorate the birth of a son to Mr T. Horton, Mayor of Blenheim, during his term of office, was presented to his Worship on Friday evening, accompanied by a purse of sovereigns, and a highly complimentary address. Councillor M'Callum acted as spokesman for the donors. A very interesting notice from Mr C. Plimmer, the manager of Plimmerton House, which is beautifully situated at the entrance of Porirua Harbor. It is admittedly the most charming seaside resort on the West Coast of this Island, while the management of the establishment is all that could be desired by the most exacting. Since last season a store has been erected in connection with Plimmerton House which will be a great convenience to visitors. An entertainment will be held in the Birmingham Town Hall on Saturday evening next in aid of tho Public Library. The first part of the programme will consist of the tableaux " Fairy scenes from midsummer night's dream," and " Where are you going to my pretty maid," songs will be given by Mrs McCardy, Messrs Stevens and W. Barlow, a violin solo by Miss Shannon, a duet and trio will also be introduced. For the second part the farce " Christmas Boxes " will be produced. On Saturday last, Arnold Edward Farland was struck on the head by a branch from a tree he was felling at Coal Creek Pohangina. He died four hours afterwards, without recovering consciousness. His mates carried him to Mr Harrison's house, a distance of about two miles over very rough country. At the inquest evidence was given by Albert Saunders, Ernest Hayward and Robert Hunt, mates of the deceased. A sale of work in connection with the Primitive Methodist Chnrch will be held in the Assembly Rooms to-morrow afternoon. The Chess match between the Palmerston and Rangitikei first team, played on Saturday night last, resulted in a victoiy for the latter. Of tbe nine games played Palmerston scored I^. The Cricket season will be opened in Feilding to-morrow, when a mateh — Married v. Single — will take place on the ground at 1 p.m. All interested are requested to attend promptly. The running tracks on tbe Oval have now been rolled and top-dressed in the rough parts, and they will be in splendid order for the sports on Boxing Day. In order that the grass seed recently sown may get a fair start cyclists are requested not to train on the Oval for abont three weeks. The recent severe weather in New South Wales has been very destructive to the newly shorn sheep, it is estimated that from 40,000 to 50,000 perished during one night in the Millin district. In one case out of 1080 sheep shorn 1000 perished during the ensuing night. Another station lost fully 4000. Owing to the scarcity of water and food lambs are yery few. A special cable from London to the Australian Star says : — " A new ' Messiah' has arisen— this time in the Island of Sicily. A fanatic, who proclaims that he is the true Messiah, and whose eloquence has gathered around him large and believing crowds, is causing a religious sensation in the island. The preacher proclaims the principles of Mormonism, including that favourite tenet polygamy, and the Sicilians, especially the men, appear to take kindly to it. Already a great many converts have been made."
