THE FROZEN MEAT TRADE.

«. The energy of the several colonies which are pushing on the export trade of frozen and chilled meat to England, has excited alarm in London, for we are told that the importers la the latter city intend to flood the Manchester meat market when there is any prospect that

direct trade will be opened up with Australia and that town by way of the new canal. This will be attempted in the hope that they may thereby be enabled to retain the monopoly at present enjoyed, to the loss of the producers on this side of the world. It will be remembered that Mr Nathan contended there existed a " Smithfield Ring," which exercised unlimited control over the prices, and this latest development amply proves the correctness of Mr Nathan's information, which, by the way, was received with a certain amount of incredulity by persons in this colony, who were innocent enough to believe in the absolute and unimpeachable commercial morality of the Smithfield business men. By capturing the Manchester trade the colonies will have made a big stride in the direction of breaking up the monopoly and getting a legitimate share of the results of their enterprise. Hence the alarm in Smithfield.
