The Manchester syndicate which proposes to establish a direct steamer service with the colonies is willing to reduce the freights from 10 to 15 per cent below the London rates, but insist on a contract for at least for two years. Commander Dawson has left for Australia, where he will be engaged for two years in surveying the West Australian ports and rovising the charts of the coast. The Licensing Committee of the London County Council has removed the restriction on the sale of liquor at the Olynipia, Palace and Empire Music Halls.
