Death of M. Pasteur.

(Per Press Association.) Paris, Sept. 27. Obituary — M. Pasteur, from paralysis, f Pasteur, Louis, was born at Dole, June, 1822. Educated, at the University oi Jena '40, taking his doctor's degree in '47. Appointed Professor of Physic at the Faculty of Sciences, Strasburg '48, and subsequently held other appointments. Awarded the Kumford Medal, '56 for his researches on the polarisation of light. Elected one of fifty foreign members of the Royal Society of London in '69, and a Member of the French Academy '82. Awarded iu the same year tbe Albert Medal of the Society of Arts for his researches as to fermentation, the preservation of wines, and the propagation of zymotic diseases in silkworms and domestic animals. M. Pasteur's treatment of hydrophobia was thoroughly discussed under that heading in the '86 edition of the Annual. In '88 the Pasteur Institute was opened in Paris. The cholera outbreak of '92 led him to institute experiments as to the possibility of anti-choleraic vaccination, and he found that the vaccine he used was absolutely successful in the case of animals. His 70th birthday was celebrated with enthusiasm before a brilliant official assembly at the Sorbonne (December 27th). Almost every university in the world of any note was represented, and the late President Carnot presided.
