♦ (Per Press Association.) Chbistchurcu, Sept. 24. At a meeting of the Winter Work Committee to-day the statement of accounts showed that the subscriptions to the Winter Work Fund had amounted to .£1155, increased by the Government subsidy of 24s in the £to £2541. The local bodies had voted £600, on which a subsidy of 20s iv the £ was paid. The total amount divided among the local bodies for expenditure was £3756, of which i'l3o 6s 4d remains unspent. The Selwyn County Council to-day resolved to support the petition of local bodies in South Canterbury that Government should set aside £10,000 for rabbit fences from liangitata to Waitaki. Auckland, Sept. 24. The Crown Lands Board have granted the lease for 66 years of 30 acres of iron sand deposit at Mokau to Mr Purser, subject to the erection of smeltiug works in eighteen months and Is per ton royalty on iron manufactured. Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.R., wrote a letter to the Board strongly urging caution as to granting the lease of iron sand deposits. The Board also granted the lease of the Waiotapu petroleum deposits to Mr Patterson in order to their being utilised. * The Crown Lands Board has granted a lease of the Waiotapu petroleum deposits to Mr Patterson. The barque Allonby is due in the middle of next month from Capetown to ship the cargo of the Wolverine for Liverpool. Woodville, Sept. 24. A small slip occurred at the Ashurst end of the Gorge at mid-night. The Napier train was delayed at Ashurst. Tho slip is expected to be cleared away to-night. It has been raining for twenty?four hours. Invercargill, Sept. 24. At the Supreme Court John William Innes, accountant, charged with stealing money of the New Zealand Pino Com- ! pany, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, with hard labour. —»—»»» ii !■
