Daring Burglary in Auckland.
» (Per Peess Association.) Auckland, Sept 20. Another safe robbery by means of explosives has occurred, this time at an early hour, at the offices of J. H. M. Carpenter, coal merchant, Newmarket. The burglars had tried the front door and failed, and then got in by the window. The safe was blown to pieces, and the inside of the building was wrecked. The contents of the safe were £12 in cash; and £ 20 in cheques contained in two small cashboxea, which subsequently were found on the Manukau Road in the direction of Parnell, burst open and rifled. The cheques were mostly strewn about the floor of the office, and in the yard. These the robbers were afraid to take with them. The explosion appears to have been heard by several residents on the opposite side of the street. About the beginning of this week it appears some burglars' emplements together with some keys, and an explosive compound were found secreted in the cemetery, and a watch was kept for several nights by the police, but the burglars who at last turned up to take away the property managed, it is said, to escape.
