The New Tariff.

(Per Press Association.) Wellington, Sept. 13 The following resolutions from the Committee of Ways and Means on the Customs duties have heen received : — R-jsolved that in lieu of the duties of Customs imposed by the Customs and Exci <c Duties Act, 1888, or by a resolution of this House passed on the 13th July, 1895, on the undermentioned articles, the following duties shall on and after 14th September, 1895, be charged thereon : — Chocolate, coufectionery (in fancy packages or in small packages for retail sale) £20 per cent ad valorem. Fruits (fresh) namely apples, plums, cherries, peaches, nectarines, medlars, apricots, quinces, tomatoes, Id a lb. Oranges, gnavas, passion fruit, \A a lb. Bananas, pine apples, }d a lb. Cocoanuts, |d a lb. Tea (whether in balk or packed ready for retail sale), 3d a lb. Rice and rice flour, 6s a cwt. Acetic acid, containing not more than 30 per cent of acidity, l|d a lb. For every additional 10 per cent or fraction thereof of acid it y, M a lb. Tinctures and medical spirits, duty imposed by resolution of July 30th, 1895, to come into operation from and after September 14th, 1895. Photographic chemicals, including glacial acetic acid. .£2O per cent ad valorem. Eucalyptus oil, in bulk or bottle, .£2O per cent ad valorem. Patent medicines, £40 por cent ad valorem. Proprietary medicines on medicants (1) bearing the naniD of the proprietor on the label for packages, (2l bearing a prefixed name in possessive case, (3) not otherwise enumerated prepared by occult secret or art, £40 per cent ad valorem. Apparel made by British or foreign dress mantle or jacket makers to the order of residents in the colouy, £40 per j ! cent ad valorem. Ribbon and crape, all kinds, £25 per cent. Cotton, piece goods — namely, velveteens and plushes (all kinds), sateens, linencttes, crepons, crimps, zephyrs, ginghams, Turkey twills, printed cottons, piques, vestings, qniltingsandmarcellas, nets, curtains, £20. Boots, shoes, and slippers, n.0.e., the invoice value of which docs not exceed 5.s per pair, 2s 9d the pair and £25 per cent ad valorem. Leather manufactures, n.0.e., £20 per cent ad valorem. Saddlery and harness, whips and whip thongs, £20 per ceut ad valorem. Plate "lass, bevelled or silvered mirrors and iookiug glasses (fixed or framed), £25 per ceut ad valorem. Jewellery, plate, gold or silver, greenstoue (cut or polished), £20 per cent ad valorem. Mouldings, in piece for picture frames, coruices or ceilings, £15 per cent ad valorem. Cash registering machines. £10 per cent ad valorem. Gasometers and other apparatus for producing gas, £10 per cunt ad valorem. Machinery, electric, and appliances, LlO per cent ad valorem. Fencing wire, plain or barbed, Is a cwt. Oil, kerosene, 6d a gallon. Oil, linseed, Is 6d a galloD. Matches, wax " plain vestas" in cardboard boxes containing 100 matches, Is 2d the gross of boxes. " Pocket vestas," in tin or other boxes, containing under 100 matches, Is 9d the gross of boxes. " Sportmans," "ovals" and "No. 4 tin vestas," in boxes containing not more than 200 matches, 5h a gross of boxes. Other kinds, for every 100 matches, or fraction thereof, contained in one box, 2s 6d the gross of boxes. Resolved that the duties of customs now charged on undermentinned articles shall cease and determine :— Shirting, colored cotton in the piece, shirting, Union (the invoice value of •which does not exceed sixpence the yard). For far, dowlas, and flax sheeting (when cut up under supervision of an officer of customs in sizes not exceeding 47in by 36in) for making flour bags, copying paper, medium and double foolscap in original labels and wrappers. Traction engines, bent wheel rims. Binder twice. Marble, granite, and other stone not dressed and polished. Matchboxes, cardboard. Resolved that there shall be levied, collected, and paid to and for use of Her Majesty upon the undermentioned articles made in any manufacturing warehouse appointed nnder section 26 of the Customs Laws Conciliation Act, 1882, and before delivery therefrom tbe following duties of excise on and after the 14th of September, 1895 :— On perfumed spirits LI the liquid gallon. On toilet preparations, which are subject to a duty of 16s the liquid gallon on importation, 12s. On toilet preparations, which are subject to 25 per cent ad valorem duty on importation, 6s the liquid gallon. On culinary and flavoring essences, 12s the liquid gallon. On pharmacopoeia tinctures, essences, extracts, and medicinal spinils, containing more than 50 per cent of proof spirit, 9d a lb. Containing less than 50 per cent of proof spirit, 4Jd a lb.
