Shoddy Shoes.
(Per Press Association.) Christchurch, Sep. 11. A deputation from the Operative Boot makers Society waited on the Hon. J. G. Ward and pointed out that the proposed duty of 25 per cent would not keep out the inferior class of imported boots. They asked that the duty at per pair might be placed on the boots and shoes of this class. They produced a pair of cheaper imported sboes, one of which was cut to pieces, to show that it was composed chiefly of cardboard. Mr Ward promised to represent the views of the deputation to the Cabinet, and took specimens of the imported shoddy in order to exhibit them in Welhngton.
