Drought in Australia.
A GLOOMY OUTLOOK.
(Per Press Association.) Sydney, Sept. 11. The Government Astronomer is of tbe opinion that tbe colony has entered on a protracted and disastrous period of drought caused by continued prevalent equatorial winds driving away rain. Otber experts concur that it is not improbable tbat tbis is tbe commencement of a cycle of dry years. The prices of meat and produce are rapidly advancing in the country districts. At Parramatta prime beef raised one penny per lb and mutton _d per lb, milk has advanced ld per quart and feed is proportionally dear. A great rise has taken place in the price of cattle in the Bathurst District owing to drought. Cattle which a few days ago would not have realised £3 per head sold to day at £8. The Governor has issued a proclamation in view of the calamity from drought, and sets next Sunday apart as the day for humiliation and prayer. Adelaide, Sept. 11. The crops in the northern district are suffering severely from drought, and it is feared they will be ruined unless rain falls soon. This Day. The atmospheric disturbance has developed over the Great Australian Bight whicli both the Government astronomer and Mr Wragge state has greatly improved the prospects of the forecast. Itain will probably fall generally in a few days. _
