Manchester Road Board.
Tho ordinary monthly meeting of the Manchester Road Board was held at iheir office, Feilding, on Saturday afterioon last. Present — Messrs F. Y. Lethmdee (chairman), H. J. Booth, G. ] Wheeler, A. Con way, J. Purkiss, W. G. ] Pearce. \ The minutes of the previous meeting ] svere read and confirmed. ] Correspondence was received and , Jealt with as follows : — . From J. Aitken, an explanation to , t letter received from Mr Hoffman by the \ Board at its last meeting. From W. Bramley, requesting that A. J. Toxwood's name be placed on rate roll in place of his. From Gardner Bros, re Gorge ferry. j From J. T. Drinkall, requesting that , T. Browne's name be placed on rate roll . in place of his. j From Fetch and Monckton, drawing . the Board's attention to tho condition j of Reid's line near Mr Adsett's ; five , trees being across the track and there , were deep ruts in the lower end. They understood that a loan was raised some ( years ago to complete this road. From T. Shortall, drawing attention to the bad state of Spur-road West, and requesting that some metal be put on. — Work completed. From H. W. Simos, stating the date of the accident to his leg was June '27th last, aud that he assessed the damages at .£6O. — The Chairman and Mr Conway to interview Mr Siiucs. From R. Lyon and Son, Ashurst, asking if any more work was coming out in this district. From Hocken Bros, requesting the Board to contribute to the support of James Wise, who is 72 years of age, and stating he had depended for some time past on the generosity of his neighbors for support. From Secretary to Treasury, provisionally granting the loan of £420 for the erection of bridge over Mangaone creek. From Land and Income Tax Department, stating the Board had received an overpayment of £10 9s lid as subsidy, and that this amount would be deducted from the next voucher. Resolved, That the name of A. J. Toxwood be placed on the rate roll, instead of Wrn. Bramley, for section 22, Scandinavian settlement. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Wheeler, That owing to the importance of the Local Government Bill this Board protest against its being passed as law during the present session ; and that the member for the district be asked to oppose the passing of same until the various local bodies have had an opportunity of considering its various clauses. — Carried. Rusolved, That 7s 6d per week charitable aid bo granted to Mr Jas. Wise for the present, and that enquiries be made as to the ability of his relatives to contribute to his support. Propose^ by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Clerk write to the owner of a diseased horse at present running of the Spur-road East, and notify said owner that if the horse is not removed within seven days from date of notice it will be impounded at owner's expense.— Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer be authorised to arrange with Mr Lasson to burn or remove the timber collected above the small bridge on FeildingAshurst road near Bunnythorpe school ; also, that he arrange with Sir Jensen to deliver about 30 or 40 yards of metal on Nannestad's road between Mr Bailey's gate and railway line. Proposed by Mr Conway, seconded by Mr Booth, That tho resolutions proposed by the warden for No. 6 ward and passed by the Board, re Mr Cotter and Gardner Bros, crossing the ferry, was intended to convey to the ferryman the following, viz., to allow the above-mentioned parties, their wives and families ; also, two household servants ; either on horseback or in conveyance to cross. The ferryman to understand that produce or any other merchandise must be paid for. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That in reply to Messrs Fetch and Monckton, this Board regrets being unable to metal Reid's line, but will have logs removed and holes filled up. — Carried. TFNDEKS. The following tenders were opened : — For erection of one 70ft span bridge over Mangaone, on Feilding-Ashurst road :— H. H. L. Bilderbeck, .£443 10s ; Fraser and Morley, £'470 3s 4d ; James and Meaney, £498 11s 9d; C. Dixon, £550 ; D. Sinclair, £607 ; R. Lyon and Son, £529 3s lid ; J. Black, £499 6s 9d. For clearing slips and trimming about 3£ miles of formation on Watershed road :— Hunt and Charles, £53 13s 4d ; J. James and Co., £99 ; R. Lyon and Son, £94 19s; Jas. O'Connor, £56; Grigg and Gild, £59 ; J. H. Henderson, £57 ; J. Macfarlane, £108 12s ; B. Poole, £98 10s ; A. Ryan, £60. Resolved, That Hunt and Charles' tender be accepted for Watershed road contract, and that of H. H. L. Bilderbeck for the bridge. The meeting terminated after passing accounts for payment.
