A rumour is current that Sir Patrick Buckley succeeds to the vacant Judgeship. An advertiser offers a reward for a gold brooch set with rubies, lost in Feilding a few days ago. Quito a host of " free laborers " were at work yesterday making improvements to the Primitive Methodist Church. Baker, of Colytou, has been served with a writ by Mr Jellicoo, at the instance of Mr J. G. Browne, for i.IOOO damages for libel. Mr Johu Cobbc points oufc that the only way to avoid the increased burden? of the customs tariff is to purchase goods of Colonial manufacture. We commend Mr Cobbc"s replace advertisement to the notice of those who desire to save money. There has boon recently invented a machine to milk cows which excels all others. The machine draws the milk by moans of an india-rubber diaphragm which is worked by an air exhaust by the jaw of the cow when chewing the cud. After workiug considerable havoc amongst the poultry in different parts of Raugiora, Canterbury, the stoats or weasels are turning their attention to cats, three or four having been found dead within the past few days with wounds in their throats. We regret to have to announce the death of William, the eldest son of John Campbell, of Warwick street, which took place this morning. The deceased had been an invalid for some years. Ho was well known and respected in Feilding where he had been a resident for about twelve years. Complications have arisen over the first prize in the Bank of Van Diemcn's lottery. The trustees have received an injunction restraining them from dealing with the prize to the extent of one half, on the application of Mr Davis, of Perth, who claims partnership with Smith, the holder of the winning ticket The death is announced in England of Dr Shadrach E. R. Jones, late of Tapauui, concerning whose career the Tapanui Courier remarks that, if published in extenso, it would read like a fairy tale. It was by his enterprise, when proprietor of the Provincial Hotel, that Otago received its visit from an All-England team of cricketers. At Ballarat, once, a circus had just ended its first part when the police seized all the performers, except the clown, and took them to the lock-up for being illegally on the ground. The clown escaped under the canvas, went into the ring, and kept the audience amused till the performers began to turn up as they were bailed out. Major Elliot, the Governor's private secretary, luckily escaped a serious accident yesterday. While getting on the train backwards at Martou just as she was moving off he tripped, aud was dragged along some distance, but fortunately Mr Martelli, the porter, jumped on to the step and held Major Elliott until he secured his foothold. During a thunderstorm afc Gainsborough the other evening (says a London despatch) a man was tolling the church bell when the lightning struck the steeple, passed to the bell, and travelled down the chain giving the ringer a fatal shock. The current appears to have paralysed the whole of one side of the man's body, and then passing to the other side to have set all the clothes on that side on fire. A Glasgow minister having observed that one of his congregation was in the habit of gazing about the church during prayers, told him one day that he considered it would be more becoming in a wor- , snipper to keep his eyes decently closed. At the last meeting of the Manawattt Road Board letters were read from the Manchester Road Board, asking the Board to take over half the length of the Stoney Creek-Bunnythorpe road — The matter was left for the new board to deal with.— From Baker and Cooke, forwarding Bell, Gully and Izard's costs in the case of Grant v Board, amounting to £26d 15s. — It was decided to request Messrs Baker and Cooke to furnish their bill of costs up to date, including witnesses' expenses. It is asserted that since the last attempt to. assassinate him, Signor Crispi has worn a shirt of mail, manufactured of the finest and lightest steel. It is with groat regret that we announce the death which took place early this morning, of Mr C. W. L. McLean, of Bulls, the only son of Mr C. W. McLean, of Feilding. Members of the Manchester Rifles are reminded there will be no parade to-mor-row night as the Hall will be in course of preparation for the Ball. Mr T. W. K. Foster, Secretary of the Feilding Masonic Lodge, intimates by advertisement that the Rangitikei Lodge will be tyled on Friday next at 1.30 p.m. to pay the last token of respect to tho late P.M. Bro. C. W. McLoau. Brethren of the Feilding Lodge are requested to attend. At a meeting of the Palmerston Debating Society last night it was decided that Messrs Laery, Grant, Anderson, | Russell, and Laureuson should take the debate at Feilding against Messrs Watson, Innes Jones, Judkins, Cobbe, and Stevens on tho 10th September. A large number expressed their intention to accompany them aud a good debate is anticipated. The annual meeting of the church members of St. James' Church, Halcombe, was held last Thursday evening, the vicar, Rev Innes Jones, presiding. The report and balance-sheet, tho latter showing a small credit balance, was read by Mr Wheeler and adopted. The following were elected a committee for the ensuing year Messrs Riddiford, Huddlestone. Clare, Wheeler, Dirty, Heappcy, and Prycc-Joucs. Mr Wheeler was appointed treasurer with power to sign cheques. It was resolved that the contribution to the Feildiug Vestry for tho ensuing year be .£3O instead of £'40, the difference being made up at Stauway.
