-♦- . The Palmerstou Rifles will hold a military ball on August 9th. Messrs Abraham and Williams will hold their Colyton sale to-morrow. Members of the Cycling Club will meet at their rooms this evening at 8 o'clock. There was a large attendance at the Excelsior Skating Rink on Saturday eveuing. A concert will be given in the Primitive Methodist Church this evening. The programme consists entirely of old fashioned songs. A reward of ten shillings will be paid for tbe return to Star office, of a black purse lost on Denbigh street or Kimbolton road. On Wednesday next Mr J. R. McMillan will hold a sale of fruit trees and flowering shrubs from the nursery of Messrs J. Mayo and Son, of Palmerston North. " Directly some individual dies without the assistance of a medical man, — " said Mr Hogg, the other night in the House, on the Coroners' Inquests Bill. He got no further ! To Mr Collins is due the credit for exposing the fact that certain " patriots " were mulcting a Southern Education Board in railway fares while travelling on the free passes with which the country provides them. Bradey, is making enquiries into the wholesale destruction of sheep in the Pabantanni district. The official is convinced that neither stoats nor weasels are responsible for the small punctures found behind the ears of the dead sheep. At tbe Wellington S.M. Court, a case was called ou in which Bcnton F. Davy was charged on the information of Messrs Grace, Clarke and Co., Wertheim Sewing Machine importers, with having infringed a trade mark. After hearing evidence, the case was adjourned for a week bail in two sureties of £10 each being allowed. A tremendous sea was running off Napier on Wednesday, and a great quantity of sand was thrown upon the beach against the wall of the Parade. Occasionally the surf invaded the footpath, strewing it with pebbles. The breakwater rece?ved the full force of the waves, 'and seyeral large concrete blocks were swept away. " It sounded like the vision of a diseased imagination," quoth Mr Tanner recently in tbe House, regarding Mr Hogg's lurid picture of Wairarapa juries. " Point of order, Sir," cried the Premier " can an honorable member accuse another of having a diseased imagination ?" " I don't think it is any reflection," said the Chairman of Committee (Mr Guinness), and while some cried '• Oh ! " the irreverent laughed. The 24,000 up spot barred match, in which J. Roberts conceded E. Diggle 8000 start, which bad been in progress at the Free Trade Hall, Manchester, during the preceding fortnight, was concluded on a recent Saturday. The contest, which was played with the new pneumatic cushions, was of an even character, each player in turn holding an advantage on the handicap. At the close of Friday's play Diggle had reached his points, 22,668 ; while Roberts whose score was 21,384, was 616_ behind bis. At night Diggle increased his break to 274, and then made others of 156, 116, and 189, finally winning by 1,351, Roberts during the evening made breaks of 108, 133, 121, and 117. The Wellington Land Board meets on Thursday next. Captain Edwin wired at noon to-day : — SE. to S. and W. gale with rain and colder weather ; glass rise soon. We regret to announce the death of the infant son of Mr H. Rutherford, of Beaconsfield, he having died on the 26th inst. The funeral took place to-day. Notice is given by the Official Assignee that a meeting of the creditors of William Goodwin, of Pemberton, contractor, will be held in the Feilding Court House, on the Bth August. The Ball Committee of the Manchester Rifles will meet this evening in the orderly room in the Volunteer Hall, and tbe Management Committee will meet iv the same place to-morrow evening at 7.30 p.m. A correspondent writes as follows : — " Some people apparently never show consideration for others, and asks who were the couple of "hoodlums" seen galloping across the polo ground on Saturday afternoon ? " Messrs Warnock and Adkin notify to-day that the premises occupied by | them having been let from August lOtb, they will continue their sale for another ten days, during which time bargains may be obtained in all departments. Mr Black, whoso knowledge of the Gothenburg system of state monopoly in the liquor trade caused him to be chosen as its exponent, is unwell. The Debating Society have therefore decided to postpone to-morrow's meeliug till the following Tuesday. Much interest is being evinced in this debate. The Feilding Golf Club opened their season on Saturday afternoon, when several members were playing. Mrs j Sandilands drove the first ball and thus ] opened the ekib's season. The links arc ] admirably selected on Mr Lcfchbridge's ground, that geutleman having kindly allowed the club the use of his property. The gamo is very exciting and requires practice and skill. There is every prospect of the Feildiug Club being a great success as the links rank with the best in tbe colony.
