Sir William Vernon Harcourt, whose defeat at tbe general election has been cabled from England, is in his 68, th year. The Kiwitea County Council met today. There was a very heavy fall of snow at Peep-o'-Day this morning. To-morrow night tbe Rev J. Cocker will preach a sermon to young men, the subject being " Tbe road to ruin." The Excelsior Skating Rink will be held in the Volunteer Drill Hall, this evening at 7.30. The Standard says Mr W. Park has resigned tbe position of Mayor of Palmerston owing to tbe serious illness of Mrs Park. Tenders are invited for felling 114 acres of bush in tbe Harbor Board Block. Specifications may be seen at Mr Culling's store. Tenders will close on 31st instant. To-morrow's services in connection with tbe Wesleyan Church are advertised. The Rev W. H. Judkins' subject for the evening service is announced in our wanted column. Tbe " chicken thief " has been at work again, and a valuable turkey ben was annexed a few nights ago, from a resident in Derby street. This style of " local industry " is annoying. Wairarapa papers announce tbe death of Mr Joseph Udy, son of Mr T. Udy, Matarawa. The deceased was a prominent footballer, and died after a few days illness. He was only 27 years of age. We learn that tho directors of tbe United Farmers' Alliance to-day favorably considered the requisition asking them to re-open their saleyards, and that tbe reductions asked for will be shortly secured.— Manawatu Times. To-day Messrs T. Boyd and Son advertise the Atalanta Bicycles, which are now claimed to be the very best iv tbe market as regards safty, strength and speed combined with lightness. The advertisers manufacture these machines at their works in Cbristcburch, and for excellence of work and finish they are certainly up to all modern requirements. They have stood the severest trials on tbe worst roads in the colony, and have come out triumphant. The price is remarkably low. Mr Fred Bennett, tbe English professional billiard player, gave an exhibition of his play at the Feilding Hotel last evening, when lie playod li. Worsfold, a local amateur, giving him 350 in a match of 750 up spot barred. Bonnet made sixteen breaks of ten and over, his principal breaks being 40, 22, 20, 22 and 46, while Worsfold made six breaks of ten aud over, namely, 16, 12, 15, 14, 10, and went out with a break of 29. At the conclusion of the game Bennett's score stood at 639, or 111 behind. The room was crowded with spectators, who took considerable interest in the game.
