The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwiea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1895. THE NO CONFIDENCE DEBATE.
Althouoh Captain Russell the Leader of the Opposition may have had excellent reasons for moving a motion in the House which the Ministry have accepted as one of want of confidence, yet we venture to think that the time was inopportune. That opinion is justified by the fact that the Premier accepted the implied challenge with alacrity because he knew perfectly well that he had a powerful majority at his back. However much the members of the Opposition and a very large section of the electors, may be dissatisfied with the Government policy they are yet to all intents and purposes too weak to overthrow the Ministry. We pointed out yesterday clearly enough that the end was not far off and that the alleged Liberals in this colony would have to give place to the Conservatives in the same way that the rival parties in England have changed places. History always repeats itself in that respect. People are prone to look for a change especially in the matter of representation. It is never the duty of the Opposition per sc to enunciate a policy, but still it would have been better for the Opposition had Captain Kussell not given the Premier such a chance of checkmating him so early in the game, and waited until circumstances placed it in his power to recruit his forces by showing that a change of Ministry would be a benefit to the colony at large. The debate will be interesting, because members will for the most part talk to their constituents quite as much as to their fellows in the House, and will therefore be careful — having an eye to the near future— not to commit themselves too far either one way or the other. Still the position will be the same, and when the division does take place there will be very little alteration in the numbers one way or the other. [Since the above was in type we learn by telegram from Wellington, that Captain Russell's amendment was lost by a large majority.]
