The interview was cordial, and the latter con gratulated the Minister on his assumption of office. Mr Chamberlain replied that he had long interested himself in the commercial progress of the colonies, and was therefore delighted to hold the present position. He was unable to define his policy until the elections had confirmed the appointment, and made no reference to Imperialism. The Agents-General did not discuss the proposal of Canada for a commission to consider the construction of the Pacific cable, as they thought it would be useless to apply to Mr Chamberlain until the elections were over. The Colonial Boundaries Bill has passed both Houses of Parliament. July 5. The Independant Labor Party is appealing for nine thousand pounds to enable them to contest 30 seats. Sir H. Parkes, in a letter to the Times insists on the necessity for Australian federation to get rid of inland custom houses. He urges that the Reid policy is inimical to federation, "which is the first and grandest question of Australasian policy.
