Temperance Convention at Palmerston.
A convention of delegates from the various Temperance Societies in the district was held yesterday at the Presbyterian Hall, Palmerston. There were about 100 delegates present. Mr G. Carson presided at the first sitting and the Rev. J. Doull during the afternoon sitting. Resolutions to the following effect were passed : — " Thafc the Government be requested, in tbeir appointments of railway managers, guards, engine-drivers, and other employees to givo preference, other things being equal, to men of total abstinence principles." " That this Convention is of opinion that the time has arrived when the temperance organisations of the colony sbould act in concert for the election of representatives to Parliament." " That the Government be requested to bring clubs under the provisions of the Licensing Act." " That a press correspondent be appointed in each electorate to supply the local papers with accurate information with respect to the temperance cause." " That, for the better enforcement of the Liceusing Act, it is desirable that Justices of fche Peace be elected and private detectives appointed to collect evidence in cases where ifc has been infringed."
