Pohangma Notes.
o Tbe danger of the lower part of the Valley road being washed away during heavy rainfalls was point' d out by Mr Palmer to tbe Council. Had not he and others acted promptly during tbe las' heavy rainfall, by turn ins the water oil the road, much more damage would have been done. The soft soil is cut away very quickly by the action of water. The side drain of the Pohans;ina is being deepened and cleared of roots and stumps. There is a large volume of water by the side of this road after heavy rains. The ditch will no doubt soon pay for the labor bestowed on it by saving the road. The maps illustrating the position, and giving the price of the forfeited sections in the Farm Homestead Association Blocks will probably be issued at the end of this month. The balloting is to take place in Wellington. A large number of swaggers come through the gorge, making their way to the Hunterville district in search of work. Many of them are surprised to find the Pohangina bridge washed away and are generally so poor that they cannot pay the ls to be rowed across to the Ashurst side of the river. The poor fellows then turn in the direction of Siberia. — Stand*l'^ m _______^^__
