The Poor Children of Wellington.
(Per Press Association). Wellington, May 21. For some time past a movement, headed by the Mayor and a committee of ladies, has been under way to give the poor children a fete on Queen's Birthday, and the committee so far has been very successful in the canvass for necessary funds. A controversy has taken place in the newspapers as to the wisdom of the proposal to bring the unfortunate children before the public gaze. To-day the Benevolent Society received an application from the Committee to be supplied with the names of the families in receipt of aid, and the question led to a deal of discussion, the result being that the society unanimously decided that such information be withheld, and the opinion was freely expressed that a great injury would be done to the children if taken out in almost midwinter on what will evidently be wet ground, and further that a more charitable action would be to expend the money raised in providing the children with warmer clothing and boots.
