Serious State of Affairs in Nicaragua.

THE BRITISH OCCUPY CORINTO. FIGHTING EXPECTED AT ANY MOMENT. (pee press association) New York, April 2S. Martial law has been proclaimed in Nicaragua and the telegraph wires are being cut. Four hnndred marines from the British warship Royal Arthur, with two machine guns, were landed in twenty-seven boats, and occupied Corinto. The troops seized the custom house and other public buildings over which the British flag was then hoisted. The local garrison withdrew on the approach of tbe British, and crossed a lagoon separating the town from the mainland, and are now in a strongly entrenched position. The warships are ready to bombard if the entrenched troops interfere with the marines. Most of the residents of Corinto have retired to San Juan. Later. The Nicaraguas are crossing Corinto to prevent the British collecting the Customs duties. This action causes some anxiety in the United States lest the British should retaliate by seizing San Juan, whicli is one of tho termini of the proposed canal. The British warships are lying within a mile and a half of the Customhouse in Corinto, and their guns cover the cit}*, which is undefended. The Nicaraguan Government has issued orders not to permit the landing of the British soldiery, and 3000 troops are | being massed in Corinto to give effect to them.
