Mr F. Pirani, M.H.R., at Colyton.
3 » 1 Mr ¥. Pirani, M.H.It., addressed 9 his constituents in the Colytun Hal) • last evening, there being 1 only a small attendance. Mr O. Pleasants was voted to the chair and introduced the speaker. Mr Pirani in his rddress dealt exhaustively with the measures intro- • duced into Parliament last session, supporting- the action of the Govern- " rnent in the matter of the bankinglegislation, which he contended was 3 necessary in the interests of the colony. 3 He supported the Government Advances • to Settlers Act, although the scheme which became law was not the same k as originally intended and amendments • would be made next session. Dealing • with local rating he said local taxation ' should not penalise improvements, which k should be exempted. Koads were not laid out in the best way, and the sys- > tern of balloting for land was bad. He ? thought a register of applications should 1 be kept and the option of taking sections : as they were available given to the first ' on the list. A large number of other 1 measures were touched on and their ■ ' provisions explained. Although not a 1 blind follower of the Government he thought they were the best set of men ' in the House to ; be entrasted with the ; affairs of the colony. In reply to Mr R. L. Padney, Mr Pirani said such purchases as the Pomahaka purchase were ' made under the Land for Settlement 1 Act after a board of examiners had reported. At the conclusion of his ad- ' dress a hearty vote of thanks to and in Mr Pirani was carried on the motion [' of Mr A. Wratt. Theusual compliment ' to the chair closed the meeting.
