The London Wool Market.
Messrs Barrsud and Abraham's London agents, Messrs E. T. Turnbull and Co., report, under date February 22nd, aa follows : — Wool.— The first series of public wool sales for 1895 lasted from tlie 15th January till sth February, with the 22nd ulto. a dies non on account of fog. The market continued to show much irregularity, according to the character of the catalogues submitted, until the closing afternoon It became known late on thu 14th instant, that the Board of Trade returns for January showed a largo increase of exports of British and Irish Woollen and Worsted Tissues over the corresponding month of the previous year, and better accounts came from tho North of France — the tone of the closing sales was, therefore, much cheerier, and the market was very firm at the end. The actual figures of the official returns fsr January are interesting enough to be quoted here. The total value of the woollen and worsted tissues exported during the month of January were: — 1895, £1,676,346; 1894, £1,263,354; 1893, £1,527,879. Of which the United States took £652,333 in 1895; £150,---726 in 1894 ; £393,713 in 1893. The sales as a whole were not very satisfactory, and 52,000 bales of wool (including 17,000 South African) were carried over — 200,000 bales roundly being disposed of (of which 108,000 were taken for export). Since the first series eam9 to an end there has has been an encouraging amount of enquiry, and over 2,000 bales have been sold privately at prices rather above the biddings in public competition. A more hopeful feeling is springing up that the bottom has been sounded. Tho second series is fixed to begin on the 7th prox.
