Manchester Road Board.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the ahove body met at their office, Feilding, on Saturday afternoon. Present— Messrs J. Purkiss, W. G. Pearce, A- Conway, H. J. Booth, G. Wheeler. In the absence of Mr Lethbridge (chairman) Mr Wheeler was voted to the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows : — From J. Horn, asking for an extension of time for completion of ifcis contract on McCrea's road. One month's extension of time granted. From J. Guy, asking permission to draw timber and bricks over Waituna road.— Permission granted on the understanding that ho will be held responsible for all damage done. From Clerk Rangitikei County Council, enclosing particulars of expenditure on Onepuhi bridge from July 7th to December 22nd, 1894, and applying for this Board's share, namely .£lB2 8s lOd, the total cost being .£547 6s sd. From M. Henaghan, asking the Board to extend the road for fifteen chains in front of his property at Stoney Creek, and also to give him an outlet by ford or bridge across the creek at the end of present metal. From L. Lassen, Bunnythorpe, asking that his name be removed from the rate roll for section 101 as he had sold it to the Education Board. — Alteration made. From J. Beard and J. Thessman, asking that the former's name be placed on the rate roll in place of the latter's for section 19, sub- division M. — Alteration made as requested. From A. M. Harris, applying for charitable assistance. From A. Green re change of name on rate roll to J. Jefferies. From Resident Engineer of Government Railways, stating the weeds and vegetation complained of as affecting drainage near Bunnythorpe would be removed. The following statements of receipts and expenditure with reference to the Manawatu Gorge tolls was read: — Receipts — Tolls collected— from January Ist, 1802, to March 31, 1892, £612 Is lOd; from April 1, 1892, to March 31, 1893, £964 5s 5d ; from April 1, 1893, to March 31, 1894, £648 19s Id ; from April 1, 1894, to September 30, 1894, £191 9s 7d ; total, £2416 15s lid. Expenditure (collection of tolls and maintenance of road and bridges) — From January 1, 1892, to March 31, 1892, £'85 17s 7d ; from April 1, 1892, to March 31, 1893, £54S 9s 9d ; from April 1, 1893, to March 31, 1894, £511 Is 3d ; from April 1, 1894, to September 30, 1894, £184 13a lid; total, £1329 13s lid, leaving a credit balance of £1087 2s. - Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Booth, That Mrs A. M. Harris be granted aid to the amount of 15s per week lor herself and family in the meantime, and that her relatives be called upon to support them.—Carried. Proposed by Mr Conway, seconded by Mr Booth, That Mr Henaghan's request for extension of road and ford be granted. - Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Booth, Thafc Mr Linton's offer of £6 per acre for that piece of land cut off by McCrea's road be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Conway, That the Clerk write to the Secretary to the Treasury and make enquiries re loan for Mangaone bridge Ashurst-Feilding road.— Carried. Resolved, That in reply to Mr R. R. Curtis the Clerk be instructed to state that this Board cannot see its way to clearing logs from roadside. ' Resolved, That the Clerk be instructed to apply for the 10 per cent on No. 4 ward loan and, also, that for No. 3 ward. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Booth, That the Clerk be instructed to write to the Rangitikei County Council and enclose cheque for £63 17s 2d being amount due by this Board before last winter's flood injured the Onepuhi bridge. Further, that he remind the County Council that when that body met the representatives of this Board at the bridge it was mutually agreed that the protective works as well as the repairs to bridge were to be done out of loan, it being impossible for this Board to find the money required in any other way. — Carried. Mr Booth reported that he and Mr Wheeler had interviewed the contractor in No. 4 ward (widening Makino road) and arranged to give him 2s per chain extra, he agreeing to complete the work at that price. This price is still under the next lowest tender. Proposed by Mr Purkiss, seconded by Mr Pearce, That the arrangement made by Messrs Booth and Wheeler with Mr Allan for continuing contract on Makino road be approved of. — Carried. Mr Wm. Newman waited on the Board and offered to complete the road from the end of the present metal to join Mt. Biggs road, a distance of about 23 chains ; ten chains of this length were formed the remainder being unformed, and he offered to form and metal the whole length for 30s per chain. — Application cannot be entertained owing to want of funds. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Booth, That Mr Allan be offered work of widening Makino road at Richardson's hill and also at junction of Wilson's line, and that the wardens for Nos 3 and 4, and the Engineer be a committee to arrange with him or others for this work. — Carried. Proposed by Mr Pearce, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That the Engineer have the upper decking on bridge near Mr Simpson's, Ashurst road, repaired.—Carried. Proposed by Mr Wheeler, seconded by Mr Purkiss, That as this Board claims all the Stanway Village road, as well as the roads laid off on the plans of the Manchester block, it cannot consent to sign a transfer of a section now called No 147, Stanway Village, by the Colonists Land and Loan Corporation. — Carried. The following tenders were received for trimming and metalling on cemetery road : — A Managh, £1 6s per chain (acaccepted); J. Managh, £1 7s 6d ; J. Belfit, £1 17s; H. Behrent, £1 8s; E. Charles, £1 8s 6d. The accounts having passed for payment the Board adjourned.
