(per phess association) Melbourne, February 28. A beautiful morning attracted a large concourse of touts to Flemington to witness the final gallops of the Newmarket Handicap and St. Leger candidates. Fortunatus covered the fastest six furlongs this morning, the time being lmin 17£sees ; but Vauilaus only took a quarter of a second longer oyer the same distance. Hova had a shade the advantage over Disparity at the conclusion of a six furlong dash, which they negotiated in excellent style in lmin 18secs. Donation executed a sterling gallop of over a mile and a half in 2uiin 45secs, moving in beautiful style. The following horses are left in the Newmarket Handicap : — Fortunatus, Hova, Whakawatea, Pilot Boj-, Capstan, Roseleaf, Devon, Solanum, Havoc, J5, Bessie McCarthy, Malolo, Mostyn, Eel King, Tassy, Disparity, Broken Hill, Eridsforde, Gaillardia, Ilium, Ganmain, Serhn, Yauitas, Idolator, Laundress, ( Mainstay, Bradford, Tullamore, Mohican Fragment, Criton, Kelp, Barbarian, Mischief, Easau Twist, The Merry Girl. St. Leger Stakes. — Maroon, The Harvester, Bonnie Scotland, Cobbity, Preston and Namesake. Sires' Produce Stakes. — Onward, Balance, Challenge, Palmetto, The Parisiemne, Acton, Trcntina, Gale. Cremedor and Coolalto. Ascot Vale Stakes.— Onward, Wallace, Challenger, Kallara, Cartridge, Palmetto The Parisienne, Acton, Trentina, Lodon, Cremedor, Calalto, Skylark and Superb. Champion Stakes. — Maroon, Havoc, Patron, The Harvester, Cobbity, Preston and Bonnie Scotland. None of Mr S. G. Cooke's horses in training were sold to-day. The sum of 1750 guineas was the highest bid for The Harvester, but was not entertained as a private offer of 4500 guineas was made yesterday for him. The Derby winner was passed in. Sydney, Feb. 28. Two express trains crowded with visitors for the Races and Cricket match left last night.
