Feilding R.M. Court.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23RD. (Before Messrs A. F. Halcombe and C. Bull, J.P.'s.) After we went to press yesterday the following cases were disposed of : - Miss Alice L. Gardiner charged Mrs Bridget Millard with having violently assaulted her at Halcombbe on the 14th instant. Mr Sandilands appeared for informant and Mr Prior for defendant, who pleaded "not guilty." The defence was that the first blow had been struck by complainant, who it was alleged, had also used abusive language to defendant prior to the assault. N. D. Gill and R. Wahle gave evidence for the plaintiff and Mrs Dixon, who was the only witness present when the scuffle commenced deposed that complainant had first used abusive language to and then struck Mrs Millard in the face with her hand, whereupon defendant commenced an attack with her umbrella. J. Mangham and J. Bork also gave evidence for the defence. The case was dismissed, each party to pay their own costs, The defended case D. Johnston v. W. Poad ; claim £10, was adjourned to next court day, Tuesday next. Mr Sandilands for plaintiff and Mr Reade for defendant, on whose application the case was adjourned and 21s solicitor's fee allowed to the plaintiff.
