Pohangina Notes.
Glorious weather prevailed on Friday last on the occasion of the school picnic. Over 70 children were present. After luncheon, Mrs Welsh (assisted by Mr Sinclair, chairman of Committee) distributed the prizes to the children. Every child on the school roll was given a nice book. Foot races afterwards were the order of the day, and caused considerable excitement, the prizes being in most instances useful articles. A vaulting competition was won by Master A. Currie (7ft 7£-ins) with Masters W. Holmes and L. Robinson close behind. The two latter tied for second prize. Between 50 and 100 adults were present, and took part in the day's enjoyment. In the evening a ball took place, and drew together a large number of people Although very warm, dance succeeded dance with great rapidity until 5 a.m. As a result of this success there will be a nice amount over after paying expenses. The promoters have promised to donate the surplus to the Hall Building Fund, and I know it will be thankfully received, as the Hall Secretary is anxious to get as much money in as possible so as to proceed with operations. As a result of the meeting of ratepayers held on Saturday steps will now be taken to take a poll to see whether the proposed loan for the Pohangina Hiding shall be raised or not. Certain sections in the Mangaone Riding are included in the rateable district for this loan. This is very hard on the owuers as they are already specially rated for the road past their sections. They will no doubt endeavour to get the new rate remitted if the poll is carried and everyone should support them, as it it not right that they should pay twice. — Standard.
