Land Purchase by the Government.

The Government have just accquired from the trustees of Sir Harry Parkes a properly of 47 acres in tlie suburbs of Chris'church. It is situatfd on the Heathcole road near the tmm line, and is at present, under lease to Mr Wicks as a vegetable garden. Possession will be given for the purposes of survey and formation of a street on the Ist of March, and final possession will be obtained on on the first of July, by which time the crops will have been removed It is pro posed to cut up the property into sections of from one acre to three acres fronting the new street, and to offer them for eelection upon lease in perpetuity at arental of five per cent upon the cost to the Government. This is the first purchase of land for pettlement in the immediate neighbourhood of any of the large centres. Ormond and others here, with a view to its acquisition for settlement under the Land for Settlement Act.
