Upper Pohangina and Coal Creek Items.
Grass seed operations are now in full swing, and on all sides fair to excellent yields are reported. Fully 400 acres of grass have been cropped this season comprising cocksfoot, rye, crested dog's tail, Timothy, fox-tail, sheep fescue, &c During the holidays a number of bush fires were raging from the Beehive up wards and some excellent barns are reported. Humble bees are very nnmerons here now. It is said that they destroy the native bees, and rob their honey ; if so they will shortly be classed with our stoats and weasels. The latter are getting very plentiful here. Mr A. Richards had fourteen half grown ducks killed by one lately, Lamb shearing has started. The average weight per fleece is stated to be from two and a halt to three pounds. Our weekly mail service is now an established fact and is greatly appreciated here. Mr 11, Fraser is acting Postmaster for Upper Pohangina, and Mr F. Richards takes charge of the Coal Creek mails What are our County Councillors about ? One half of the summer gone and yet we have to keep to the river beds, on account of our roads only being constructed here and there. — Standard.
