Colyton School Concert.

A concert was given iv the Colytou Public Hall last evening by children attending the Colyton State School, .the attendance being yery large. The hall was nicely decorated with ferns and evergreens, and presented a pleasing appearance. The first part of the programme was composed entirely of items by the school children, who were instructed in the singing by Miss M. Shortall, MrFriberg's assistant teacher in the school. Every credit ia due. to Miss Shortall for the manner in which the children were trained and conducted in the glees and action-songs. At the conclusion of the concert, while thanking the audience for their attendance and those visitors from Feilding who assisted, Mr Friberg paid a high tribute of praise to Miss Shortall for bringing the children to such a state of efficiency. He remarked that it was a most unusual thing for a pupil teacher to conduct a concert, a task which many a certificated * teacher could notundertako. He thought they should be proud of a teacher who herself had been taught in the same school. The children were very orderly in taking their positions on the stage, showing that Mr Friberg, who acted as stage manager, had perfect control over them. The entrance of the youngsters on to the stage to waltz music was very pretty. The upper classes sang the glees " The Old Familiar Place," •• Who Comes Laughing," Forget-Me-Not," " 'Twas You, Miss," and "Lord, While For All Mankind We Pray." The lower classes sang the action songs "I'd Like to be a Sailor," »• The Excuse," " A Merry Band of Soldiers," and "The Busy Mother." The whole school sang the glee from " Oberon in Fairy Land." The recitation •« The Soldier's Funeral," was nicely givon by Miss May Woodman. A duet, "Her Sweetheart," by Misses Olive Pleasants and Maria Simpson was a pleasing item, while the duet " Will You Marry Me " by Miss Bessie Stewart and Master Charles Ivess was one of the best itoms of the evening. " The Pussic's Tea Party," a recitation by fire of tho youngest children in the school, Mary and Emma Flowers, Etna and Perla Flowers, and Nellie Power, was cleverly given for such young children. A comic recitation by ten " nigger " boys iv costume was also cleverly given. Master James Lank, shear highly amused the audience by appearing in character and singing the comic song " Dutchman's Dog," receiving an encore. The second part was opened with a pianoforte overture by Miss Oarlick. Mss Stewart sang the " March of the Cameron Men," giving as an encore '• Coming Through the Ryo." Miss Diamond sang, with violin obligate by Mr S. Moore, "Whisper aud 1 Shall Hear," repearing a verso as an encore. The ?ev. Innes Jones sang "The Pedler," and response to an encore and repeated the last verse.
