» | Per Press Association. | Auckland, December 10. A fire broke out to day in the premises occupied by Wriggleaworth and Brans, photographers. The building was of brick, and two stories were gutted. The fire was discovered by the manager for Eden George. The damage is estimated at £1000. During the voyage of the schooner Fleetwing, from Norfolk Island, the cook, C Hansen, a Norwegian, was lost of Norfolk Island. He fell overboard in a lurch of tbe vessel. Invebcabqill, December 10. Win. MoFarlane, while working in a gravel pit at Stouey Creek, was buried by » slip, He was extricated and brought to tht Invercargill hospital, but died on Sunday evening. At the adjourned meeting of the Invaroargill Licensing Committee to-day all applications for the extension of tbe hours during which bars may remain open to 11 p.m. were refused bjr 5 to 8 votes. Two men named Thomas Bundell and James Coles were drowned near the mouth of the Waiau river, at noon to-day, by the capsizing of a boat. Rundell leaves a wife and six children in Invercargill. Coles was single, and a sawmill hand residing at Colac Bay. Wellington, December 10. Mr H. B. Glegg, for many years manager of the Wellington branch of the National Bank of New Zealand, who is at present on leave in Europe, will not return to the colony and has retired from the service of the bank. It is understood that the negotiations for the appointment of Mr J. P. Maxwell as Commissioner to report on the Vie torian railways, has been broken off Constable O'Donovan, a popular officer, who has held the positon of Court Orderly here for some years past, has been transferred to Stratford where he succeeds the late Constable Leahy. Christcburch, December 10. The Cathedral spire was injured by the recent earthquake. The damage which 18 not serious, and can easily be remedied consists of a crack in the part thrown down by the heavy earthquake a few years ago, and since restored in fire brick. The Papanui shooting oase came before the lI.M. Court to-day when Charles Henrr Wagstaff was committed for trial on the charge of unlawfully wounding Charles Langdon, and Langdon was committed on a charge of unlawfully attempting to commit a burglary at Wagstaff's house. Bail was allowed each of acoused in self at £100 and two sureties of £50. The Bey. Mr Chadoweki, who has been in charge of the Jewish congregation for the last six years, is leaving shortly for England. Owing to deaths and removals the Hebrew congregation has diminishod to such an extent that it is difficult to provide tbe minister's stipend.
