(Post Correspondent.) Melbourne, November 21. Helena Elliot, a young lady of 24, recently from Adelaide, was found dead on the railway h'ne at Scarsdale Junction, near Ballarat, last week. Her head was severed from her body by the Stawell train. It is apparently a case of suicide. Her brain has been affected by a recent fever. Hobart, November 23. An enquiry was held at the Brisbane Police Court into the circumstances attending tbe death of Alfred Ridley, a coal trimmer on board the steamer Duke of Devonshire, while off Aden, towards the end of September. Several firemen deEosed that the deceased was overcome y the heat, which registered 170 deg., and he was unable to work. The third engineer struck him and compelled him to work, bnt eventually he succumbed. The evidence of the engineers, captain, and doctors was to the effect that death was probably due to heat apoplexy. They asserted that the deceased: was not compelled to work if he could not stand the neat, and that he volunteered to remain in the stokehole. The third engineer denied that he struck the deceased.
