In Bankruptcy.
A meeting of creditors iv the bankrupt estate of Stephen Thomas Hunt, of Ashurst, a laborer, was held iv the Feilding Court House yesterday after, noon. Mr G. J. Scott, D.0.A., presided. C. A. W. Hunt was the only creditor present. The sworn statoment of assets and liabilities was as follows : — Liabilities Thos. Lowes, Binning* ham, i' 69 ; W. A. Sandilands, Feildinfi, ! £6 2s lid ; C. A. W. Fitzherbert, 15s 6d ; Foresters' Hall Co., Ashurst, £1 10s ; B. O. Bergersen, Palmerstou, 6s ; S. Ingram, Ashurst, £o 4g Id ; G. Brewer, 10s ; Dr. Locking, £1 13 b;G. S. Rumble, Ashurst, £8 ; J H. Paton, 10s ; Rimmcr and Craven, 3s 9d. Total £134 19s 7d. Assets Five shares in Clapham Boat Company £5 ; book debts .£2l 12s 6d, estimated to produce £16 10s ; one share Farmers' Alliance Jfls ; one sharo Dairy Union 5s ; cash in hand 2s 6d ; furniture £20 ; total, £42 12s 6d. Deficiency £92 7s Id. In reply to questions from the D.0.A., tho debtor said that s la 1892 he had a bush contract from Mr Dickens, Pohaugina, the acreag* was something over 100 acres at 80s au acre, lost by the contract owing to a bad hand and to the fact that he lost two children; kept n« books; had as many as five men working for him ; took the contract in May ; was laid up for ten weeks about the August following ; finished the contract about November ; started butchering in February 1893 with a Mr Hopkins, at Pohangina ; opened a shop iv Aihurst in July ; couldn't get their money ip and had to close in October of tho samo year ; lost his time, ami also £50 his father had advanced to him, in the busiuess; went into the Gorge Hotel ou October 19th, 1893, and gave up possession on June 30th, 1804 ; had no money when ho went into the hotel, which he left about July 6th or 7th ; leased the hotel and furniture at 30s a week and bought the stock, to be paid by monthly iustalmeuts ; did not know the value of the stock he took over from Mr Lowes ; paying £11 8s 4d a month for a year ; this 'covered tho rent ; the lease was only for twelve month ; owed Mr Lowes £69 for stock and rent ; was in the hotel nine months ; the money he owed C. A. W. Hunt was for money lent ; most of the debts were contracted while ho was iv tho Hotel ; was a married inau with fonr children.
