The rivalry between Japan hud China with regard to ?orea is of long standing. Chiua has always claimed that Corea is a tributory State ; Japan's contention is that there ia a closer affinity between the Japanese and the Corenns than between the latter and the Chinese, and that Japanese influence should be paramount.
