Sir Robert Stout on the Temperance Question.
* | Per Fbebs Association.) Dunedim, July 18. A deputation, comprising nearly fifty temperance workers, waited on Sir Robert Stout this morning to ascertain the present position of liquor legislation in the House, and ask his advice as to the best course for them to pursue in the future. la reply Sir Robert Stout stated what had been done in the House so far this session, and said that if members would keep their pledges there would be no difficulty in passing a brief Bill to right the many absurdities in the Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act. He favors the introduction of a clause giving more power to committees, and opposes the Consolidated Bill of two hundred clauses mentioned by the Premier, as the result would only be a waste of time. ' He urges that there should be sufficient police control, or, if not, temperance legislation will fail, and also says the utmost vigilance is necessary on the part of the Temperance Party.
