Correspondence.
«. . TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR. Sin, — I read with interest the letter by " Mud-Foot " in last Thursday's edition of the Feilding Star, and should like to say a few words about the filthy state of the roads around Birmingham. I reside about six miles from that township, and last Saturday I rode into it. I can honestly say I have never seen roads in a worse condition than on that day, and if they are bad now what will they be like in a little while? From the corner of the cemetery — two miles from Birmingham, on the Pemberton road, — the road was simply covered with slush, a good many inches deep ; but worse than this there are deep holes, all over the roatl, all the way to Birmingham which will, I fear, cause many an accident to drivers of vehicles, as at any moment they may be upset ; and riders may be thrown by their horses stumbling in one of them. Is it not possible that the Kiwitea County Council or the Government can do something in the matter V They might fill in the holes with metal, if they do nothing else. I know it is useless putting any metal on the roads this winter, but I hope that when the spring comes they will contrive to keep the " main road V to Pemberton in a little better condition than it is at present. Surely the Government owe something to the settlers on bush farms, who are doing their best for the good and welfare of New Zealand, and they repay us by giving us bad roads. I am, etc., W.F.B. Birmingham, July 2nd, 1894.
