CHELTENHAM SPORTS. - TO THE EDITOR OF Ttfß STAR. ' Sie,-I think that the letter signed by Mr Brace, which appeared in your issue of yesterday,- requires a little explanation. After having offered the use of my woolshed, with ftimW lor seating accommodation, to the Cheltenham Sports Committee lor concert and dance in aid of funds for the exaction of a Hall, which offer -was accepted and tickets issued naming the *hea as the place of meeting, I was surprised, a, day or two prior to the "date fixed, to hear from an outsider that the" affair " was to be held in the Kiwitea Hall— no notification of the change being sent to me by the Committee. Judge then my annoyance on hearing that rumours were in circulation to the effect thai the reason of the change was' that I had withdrawn my permission for use of the . shed. , I then wrote to the Committee pointing out the existence «£ these rumours and m»lrimg for publicity being given to a denial of such. This was given in 'an indefinite, .sort of way in the Advocate and Mercury, but- as your esteemed paper is the local one I desired to see a denial published' in it also. With this object I expressed my desire of seeing the Committee personally, and on Saturday morning* lastf* may son informed Mr Cartwright, the Hon. Secretary, what the nature of my business would be. I was on the point of leaving for the meeting when. I noticed Mr Cartwright's letter of contradiction in your issue of that evening, and felt that the Committee had acted ii* a straightforward manly way by anticipating my wishes. But, sir, what is the mining of Mr J. Brace's letter in Monday's issue ? Is it " a blow on the back " for Mr Cartwright, for me, or for both of us? Does the writer intend to insinu* ate that these rumors were circulated by myself ? , If so, I would refer him to Mr W. Jones, the President, who was unavoidably from the last meeting and who is more able to fully bear out my statement- that rumours were in circulation, and widespread. 0% does , Mr Brace mean tfl> infer that Mr Cartwright's statement is not m' accordance with fact, and that! <f i(2 make a promise and then withdraw it ? If so, in order to be consistent, I beg to withdraw the promise of a subscription of i$ which I made towards the funds of the Hall. Apologising for taking up so much of your space, I am etc., ■■;■•" J. R. JOHNSTON. Ka Mano, Cheltenham, June 3Sth 1994
