Oroua River Protective Works.
A meeting was held, at the Feilding Hotel on Saturday "evening, of several settlers, viz., Messrs Cha*. Bull, E. Jenn'ins, R. Whisker, G. Bon ness and H. L. bherwill (attorney for Mr Hadow), interested in the protection of the banks of the Oroua river, to prevent its overflow and the consequent damage to their properties. Mr Bull occupied the chair and reported that the deputation appointed had interview ed the Manawatu County Council to ask if that body would grant them a sum sufficient to cover the cost of substantial protective works at the locality in question. This the Council could not do, but a resolution wa3 passed that a loan of £250 be raised. There were only two courses open, either to raise the necessary amount by private subscription or by a loan over the sections of those interested. A loan of £250 would mean £12 10s a year interest for 26 years, and would ' be divided amongst eight land-holders, viz., Messrs Chas Bull, R. Whisker, G. Bon ness, E. Jennings, A. Dernier," Hadow, G. Hunter, E. Jackuian. It was resolved on the motion of Mr j Sherwill, seconded by Mr Whisker,! That proceedings be taken to raise a loan of £250 to protect the banks of the Oroua river opposite Messrs Bull and Whisker's properties. Mr Sherwill was instructed to write to the clerk of the County Council, Mi* Cox, giving him the names of those whose' properties would be in the special rating district and asking him to take the necessary steps at once for raising a loan. It was resolved that in the meantime a ditch be cut through a shingle bed, which turns the current into the bank, at an expenditure of about £o, to be raised by private subscription, and that Mr Bull be authorised to get the work done without delay.
