The Licensing Committees.
— . «. The first annual meeting of the Falmerston Licensing Committee under the new Act was held afc Palraerston yesterday. Present — Mr W. H. Brabant, Stipendiary Magistrate, in the chair, and the following members of the Committee: Messrs G. M. Snelson, F. Pirani, K. Edwards, F. Bryant, R. S. Abraham, A. Jack, and D. Buick. All the Palmerston licenses were granted including the following : — Endyraion Hotel Awahuri — Maurice Drury applied for the renewal of the license. Mr Fitzherbert appeared for the applicant. The police report was satisfactory, and the application was granted. Colyton Hotel— C. A. \V. Hunt applied for the transfer of a license. The police report was satisfactory. The application was granted on condition that the licensee increased the stable accommodation to 12 horses and metalled the stable yard. The work to be carried out before the next quarterly meeting. Apiti Hotel. — Ben. Poole applied for the renewal of the license for his house. Mr Sandeman appeared for the applicant. The chairman said the application was for a publican's license, and the applicant's solicitor said that a mistake had been made, but he would allow the application to be considered as for a publican's license. The application was granted. Pohangina Accommodation House — Samuel Palmer applied for the renewal of the license for the Pohangina Accommodation house at Pohangina. Mr Moore appeared for the applicant. The chairman announced that the Committee had decided to renew the license at a fee of £20, on condition that three new bedrooms were added 10 x 12 each, properly furnished, and the other furniture renewed to the satisfaction of the Committee, to be inspected by Mr Fred. Pirani. The applicant accepted the license on the condition laid down.
(Per Press Association). HaWkiia, Juno 8. At the meeting of the Patea Licensing Bench to-diy, all renewals of publicans and accommodation licenses were granted. Extensions to 1 1 p.m. were granted to the hotels in Patea and Hawera. Puvkdin, June 8. At a meeting of the Clutlia Committee, a number of applications were received, but in the face of the recent local option vote, the chairman ruled the Committee had no power to deal with them. Three applications were lodged for wholesale licenses with the proviso that the business would not be conducted in the late licensed houses of the applicants. These applications were supported by a numerously signed memorial. One member of, the < ommittee said it was monstrous that the chairman could override tho vote of the people. The chairman reminded the Committee that the wholesale licenses were expressly excluded from the local option vote. He commented severely on the conduct of the Committee in coming to a decision to refuse before hearing applications. At a meeting of the Masterton publicans to-day an agreement was signed that no liquor should on any account be sold on the Sabbath Day,
