Prohibition League.
A meeting of the above League was held in the Temperance Hall last evening, the Rev. W. H. Judkms being in the chair. There was a moderate attendance of those interested. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was read from Mr Geo. Grant, Palmerston North, stating that the Rev. J. DouH, of Bulls, and the Rev. W. H. Judkins had been nominated to represent the Rangitikei district, and asking this society to get a vote from each society in 'this neighborhood. Resolved, That this society ' vote for the Rev. Mr Judkins It was resolved, That, the Rev. Mr Judkins and Messrs Shearer and J. C. Thompson be a committee to arrange for Sucday out-door meetings. A resolution was passed, That -the Rev. Mr Judkins and Mr Shearer arrange with the members of the W.C.T.U. with regard to obtaining signatures to a petition which is to.be presented to the House of Representatives. ,iI he petition reads as follows-: — "To the Hon. the Speaker and Members of the House of Representatives, in Parliament assembled.— The petition of the undersigned residents in the Colony of New Zealand, of the. age of 21 and upwards. Humbly Sbeweth, that your petitioners believe that your Honourable House is not yet possessed of such information as will enable it to judge of the numjjer of persons in New Zeatand who desire that the importation, manufacture, and sale of intoxicating liquor as a beverage should be prohibited. Your petitioners, therefore, humbly pray that your Honourable House will cause to be taken, within twelve months from the receipt of this petition, or as early thereafter as conveniently may be, a ballot vote of the Parliamentary electors upon the question of the Colonial Prohibition of the Liquor Traffic, submitting the issue in the following terms upon the voting paper : — • Are you in favor of the immediate prohibition by law, throughout New Zealand, of the importation, manufacture, and sale of intoxicating liquor as a beverage? Yes or No.**' ' It was resolved that a thorough canvass be made for signatures to the petition. Ac the conclusion of the business Mr S. Andrew gave an interesting address on the prohibition question while recitations were given by Messrs W. G. and A. Shearer, G. B. Johnston, and one of J. B. Gough's temperance orations was given by Mr Sherlock.
