The Dairy Industry.
At the Agricultural Conference at Wellington yesterday, the Dairy Pro. duce Committee brought up the 'following recommendaiion:— -That it be a recommendation to dairy inspectors and dairy factory managers to pay more attention to the state pf dairy factories and the condition of milk cup. plied to those factories,- and that inspectors be ' imtracted to use all the means in their poke* to obtain information from dairy factory managers to detect any cases in mitK is supplied in an unsatisfaetorycondition. That farmers supplyin^milk/must use. a cooler to pass. their millc through as it comes from the cow. - That representations be made to: the (Railway Commissioners thai' it Js absolutely necessary to place at'tbe disposal of producers thoroughly insulated vane forth* carriagtflof their produce, in time for next season. ; That tiorernment be asked to provide^ the necessary cool storage for dairy produce at the ports of Auckland, Wellington, Ljttelton, Tort Chalmers, the Bluff, and all other ports where; from time to time it may be found necessary, either in stores already aTailable for otherwise. That Government graders be appointed to inspect and: class all butter and cheese, shipped to the Home market. That seeing the absolute necessity that exists for the better transit of butter by coastal steamers, the Agricultural Department be asked to make arrangements with the Union S.S. Company to fit up one or more coastal steamers with refrigerators for this purpose, and to have one. steamer at least for the; coming season. That with a view to encourage the carriage of butter by rail, the Commissioners be asked to reduce the rates on butter for export^ also that the carriage of cream should be put on the same basis as that of butter,- and as a great deal of damage is done to butter while waiting at railway stations, the Commissioners be asked to instruct all station masters to use their best endeavors to have the same protected as much as possible . from the sun. That it be a recommendation to the Agricultural Department to supply practical instruction in butter and cheese manufacture in the different centres throughout the colony. That as the temporary appointment of a produce expert in London has been found to be of great service to New Zealand, this conference urges Govern-, ment to make such appointment a per-l manent one. The report was onani-" mously adopted. . . 13TJXEDIK, M ay 31. - The National Dairy Association is understood to have arranged a con tract for a fortnightly service for the carriage of dairy produce to London for the ensuing season, with the New Zealand and Shaw, Saville, and Albion Companies. The Association is to have the prior right to all space in r the cool chamber of the Companies' alternate fortnightly despatched steamers from Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, and Wellington.
